M&F Bank and Optus Bank announce merger to create largest Black-owned U.S. bank

Durham-based Mechanics & Farmers Bank plans to merge with South Carolina-based Optus Bank in an approximately $105 million transaction. The combined institution would have about $1.3 billion in assets and 10 branches, expanding Black-owned banking capacity across North and South Carolina.
