    Your Smartphone Could Be Haunted

Tech expert explains what you need to know about the "Ghost" cyber attacker

Are you afraid of ghosts? You should be…at least when it comes to your phone. There’s a new cyber attack to fear called Ghost Telephonist, and with this hack, cyber criminals can take over your phone while the device is tucked ‘safely’ in our pocket.

Karl Volkman, tech expert and CTO of SRV Network, Inc., says, “Most of us don’t leave the house without our smartphone, even if we are just running to the corner for a quick coffee. Yet we don’t think to protect our data or realize that hackers are easily getting into our smartphones.”

There is also another smartphone hack to fear—SonicSpy. With this malicious software, hackers are spying on people’s phones and taking everything from emails to audio clips to photographs.

Volkman says that our everyday habits could be increasing the likelihood of cyber-hacking. “We are so used to having Internet everywhere we go that we don’t think twice when we go to a public place and log onto their Wi-Fi connection. But this can be a dangerous habit. You should be very careful when clicking ‘allow’ when a new Wi-Fi system wants access to your phone. Public Wi-Fi connections are playgrounds for hackers, and once they get access to your phone, they can access everything from your photos to your contacts to your work emails to your personal financial data or anything else you might have saved to your device.”

People take other cyber risks as well without their knowledge. “Many people tend to get annoyed by their phone’s frequent request to perform a system update. They click ‘ignore’ because they don’t want to be bothered at that moment, then they forget to ever perform the update. This can be quite dangerous because these updates often have important security fixes.”

There are many other crucial hacking-prevention tips that Volkman thinks every smartphone user should know.

“Always make sure your Bluetooth is turned off unless you need it at that moment,” he says, “Hackers can easily get into your phone through your Bluetooth. And be aware of apps—only download apps from a trusted source. And quickly delete and block any unknown senders who texts you links or messages. Often these links will include a virus that can be used to phish information.”

MetroPCS Opens New Stores with Help from YouTube Star James Wright Chanel

(Black PR Wire) April 5, 2016 - Chicago, IL -Since catching fire with his now famous video reviewing soul legend Patti LaBelle’s “Good Life” sweet potato pie, James Wright Chanel, singer and YouTube sensation, has become an unofficial-official voice for consumers who buy products to make their lives easier and expect quality. It’s why MetroPCS and James teamed up to bring to customers more than just wireless service, but a wireless experience. Expanding on that quality, MetroPCS opened two new stores to better serve its customers. The new locations include:

  • 6805 W. Brown Deer Road – Milwaukee, MI

“MetroPCS is on to something!” says Wright Chanel. “This is the type of service and involvement, I believe, everybody wants from businesses in their neighborhood.”

MetroPCS customers and fans alike were able to meet James Wright Chanel and his booming personality at the opening of both new MetroPCS locations, take photos, and participate in other community-focused activities, including product give-aways. To make the events memorable, James also recorded a new video about the experience.

“Our mission is to over-deliver to our customers with outstanding service,” says MetroPCS field marketing manager Michael Coburn. “We want to surprise and delight them with experiences they don’t normally get in their local communities, so having James join us for the store openings was a great way to do just that.”

With the expansion of stores in the metro Milwaukee and Chicagoland areas, MetroPCS and its affordable yet stellar cellular service products, backed by the T-Mobile network, believes just like James, that your money is hard earned and every dollar matters. Providing unmatched value, MetroPCS makes wireless simple, offering unlimited talk, text and data plans to over 10 million customers and counting.

July is National Cell Phone Courtesy Month

    - Tips From Founder Jacqueline Whitmore

It’s one of the greatest inventions of our time, but as the cell phone has evolved into the smartphone, it’s also one of the greatest distractions, too. July is National Cell Phone Courtesy Month, an event founded by author and etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore in 2002 with the intent of making cell phone users more respectful of their surroundings.

To avoid offending others, Whitmore offers this advice in honor of National Cell Phone Courtesy Month:

    - Be all there: When you're in a meeting, performance, courtroom or other busy area, let calls go to voicemail to avoid a disruption. In some instances, turning your phone off may be the best solution.

    - Keep it private: Be aware of your surroundings and avoid discussing private or confidential information in public. You never know who may be in hearing range.

    - Keep your cool: Don't display anger during a public call. Conversations that are likely to be emotional should be held where they will not embarrass or intrude on others.

    - Learn to vibe: Always use your wireless phone's silent or vibration settings in public places such as business meetings, religious services, schools, restaurants, theaters or sporting events so that you do not disrupt your surroundings.

    - Avoid "cell yell:" Remember to use your regular conversational tone when speaking on your wireless phone. People tend to speak more loudly than normal and often don't recognize how distracting they can be to others.

    - Follow the rules: Some places, such as hospitals or airplanes, restrict or prohibit the use of mobile phones, so adhere to posted signs and instructions. Some jurisdictions may also restrict mobile phone use in public places.

    - Excuse yourself. If you are expecting a call that can't be postponed, alert your companions ahead of time and excuse yourself when the call comes in; the people you are with should take precedence over calls you want to make or receive.

    - Focus on driving: Always practice wireless responsibility while driving. Don't make or answer calls while in heavy traffic or in hazardous driving conditions. Place calls when your vehicle is not moving, and use a hands-free device to help focus attention on safety. Always make safety your most important call. And always check the laws of your particular state.

FCC Votes to End Predatory Phone Rates

    - Under leadership of Chairwoman Clyburn, FCC measure to provide economic relief to more than 2 million families of prisoners. Center for Media Justice -

Washington D.C.- Today, members of the audience burst into tears and cheers as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted an order to lower interstate prison phone rates, a move that will protect more than 2 million families who rely on long distance phone calls to stay connected to an incarcerated loved one. Present at the vote were families of prisoners, advocates and allies, including Mrs. Martha Wright, who filed a petition that was referred to the Commission to address the issue of predatory prison phone rates over 10 years ago.

“I am 36 years old, and the mother of two young boys, aged 5 and 10,” said Bethany Fraser, who testified in front of the FCC. “Losing their father to prison also meant losing over half of our family's income, and gaining a painfully large phone bill. As you vote today I would like each of you to know that I would do anything, and pay any amount to keep my children connected to their father.”

Interim FCC Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn was visibly emotional during the vote, having led the Commission’s efforts to reform a predatory prison phone market that charges up to a $1/minute plus additional fees to captive customers who rely on these phone calls to maintain relationships with loved ones who are incarcerated or detained. The new rules ensure that families of inmates--including an estimated 2.7 million children--will have an easier time staying connected, which research demonstrates reduces recidivism rates and increases community safety.

The FCC voted 2-1 in favor of reforming the prison phone industry and ending the price-gouging of families who accept calls from their incarcerated loved ones. Commissioner Ajit Pai cast the lone dissenting vote.

The FCC put in place a safe harbor rate of .12/minute for prepaid calls and .14min for collect calls. The order also imposes a rate cap of $.21/minute for debit and prepaid calls and $.25/minute for collect calls to ensure that prison phone rates are “just, reasonable and fair.” The FCC also determined that site commissions paid by prison phone companies to contracting government agencies (up to 70% of prison phone revenue) are not a cost of providing phone services and thus can not be recovered.

Today’s vote comes after more than a decade of advocacy by families of prisoners and is the result of the Campaign for Prison Phone Justice, a two-year national campaign led by the Media Action Grassroots Network, Prison Legal News and Working Narratives in collaboration with diverse public interest, civil rights, and human rights organizations.

“Phone companies have repeatedly claimed without evidence that protecting consumers threatens profits and security,” said Steven Renderos, from the Media Action Grassroots Network. “Today the FCC showed that they were listening to the research that overwhelmingly demonstrates keeping families connected through prison bars builds stronger families, better communities and makes us all safer.”

The FCC’s order applies to interstate phone calls (calls from one state to another) made from state or federal prisons, county jails and immigration detention facilities.

“This is truly a historic day that will affect more than 400,000 people in immigrant detention who are often detained in others states far from their loved ones and communities of support,” said Christina Fialho co-founder of Community Initiatives for Visiting Immigrants in Confinement (CIVIC).

In addition to today’s vote the FCC issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to gather more information to consider reforms related to in-state prison calls and addressing the needs of prisoners who are deaf and hard of hearing.

“The vote today was an important first step but we have more work to do,” said Alex Friedmann, with Prison Legal News, a project of the Human Rights Defense Center. “State legislators and regulators have the power to follow the FCC’s lead and all appropriate agencies should work to ensure universal access to affordable phone rates for all consumers of prison phone calls.”

TRACFONE WIRELESS, INC. ISSUES FACT SHEET ABOUT WIRELESS BROADBAND PILOT PROGRAM

MIAMI, FL. – February 7, 2013 – TracFone Wireless, Inc., issued the following fact sheet today about the wireless broadband pilot program it is undertaking at the direction of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to benefit income-eligible households by “increasing digital literacy and use of the Internet [to] help bridge the skills gap [and] reduce job search discouragement.”

Fact #1: The FCC’s Wireless broadband pilot program is seeking ways to bridge the digital divide, while using the best practices in doing so. As the FCC explains: “The primary goal of the Pilot Program is to gather high-quality data that will help identify effective approaches to increasing broadband adoption and retention by low-income consumers …” To achieve this goal in the selection process, the FCC strongly favored pilot projects designed as field experiments that implement standard best practices common among field experiments. TracFone’s pilot project is listed by the FCC as an example of such a carefully designed field experiment.

Fact #2: All aspects of the TracFone pilot project application and the FCC selection process are a matter of public record. Full documentation about all proposals and why individual pilot projects were selected by the FCC is available at http://apps.fcc.gov/ecfs/comment/view?id=6017161168 and generally through the FCC’s Electronic Comment Filing System at http://apps.fcc.gov/ecfs/.

Fact #3: In a competitive process, the FCC chose TracFone Wireless as one of a number of companies to carry out wireless broadband pilot projects for the FCC. A total of 14 pilot programs were authorized by the FCC. TracFone submitted two different pilot project proposals, one of which was selected.

Fact #4: The TracFone pilot project is limited to 12 months. Federal Lifeline support for the TracFone pilot project is capped at $915,000.

Fact #5: The TracFone pilot project will be carried out in Florida, Maryland, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin and Massachusetts. The project will study the effects of subsidy amounts and discounted hardware. TracFone, in partnership with Technology Goes Home, will test the effect of both discounted price and hardware cost on mobile broadband adoption and retention using four variations in its broadband service plans and one control group randomly assigned over a large, geographically diverse sample. By offering varying combinations of free or discounted hardware and $10 or $20 per month service, low-income customers’ sensitivity to upfront and ongoing prices can be measured.

Fact #6: Taxpayers do not pay a penny for wireless Lifeline, including pilot projects. Cutting the Lifeline program or removing funds for broadband pilot programs will not reduce the federal deficit by one cent. That is because federal funds do not pay for Lifeline. The program is not funded with tax dollars. Instead, this program is funded by contributions from telecommunications companies, which can elect to share the costs of those contributions with their subscribers. Companies that offer free wireless cell phone services pay for the phone themselves. Far from imposing a burden on taxpayers, wireless Lifeline has been documented to help low-income people find and keep jobs, which ultimately reduces spending on public assistance programs.

Fact #7: TracFone has been a leader in promoting tight oversight of the overall wireless Lifeline program to control fraud and abuse. There is a strict prohibition against beneficiaries receiving Lifeline benefits for more than one phone service. The FCC recently took actions to further tighten eligibility requirements and transparency in the wireless Lifeline program. Many of the eligibility requirements that were adopted were done so at the urging of TracFone Wireless. The FCC included such TracFone-backed reforms as a 60-day non-usage policy, identity checks by using the individual’s name, date of birth, Social Security Number and address, and most importantly, the creation of a national database to verify applicant information by 2013. TracFone has been a proven leader in preventing waste, fraud and abuse and is currently working to form public/private partnerships with states to help create Lifeline eligibility databases and to enable Lifeline providers to access existing state databases.

TracFone Wireless, Inc. is a subsidiary of América Móvil S.A.B. de C.V. ("AMX") (BMV: AMX; NYSE: AMX; Nasdaq: AMOV; LATIBEX: XAMXL), AMX is the leading provider of wireless services in Latin America.
